Shizu Hamono is a knife maker, established in 1959 in Seki by Masami Horibe who grew up in Seki city, the city of blacksmiths, and naturally became a craftsman.

Gen (玄) means BLACK and EXPERT in Japanese.

The distinctive black iron and Damascus pattern make you feel the beauty and depth of Japanese harmony. The traditional Japanese chestnut handle naturally grips the hand, and the hammering on the blade stops food from sticking.

The Gen series of kitchen knives are unique in that it has a real kurouchi finish typically only found in carbon steel knives. Gen knives are 100% stainless steel with a VG10 core. This real kurouchi finish is created after 29 months of research and development by the engineers at Shizu. This is in contrast with Chinese made kurouchi kitchen knives which are typically painted black and can easily be chipped off. Real kurouchi is a strong chemical bond of black iron oxide on the surface of steel which does not shed or chip.
